            A well known poet and literary figure in Gujarati Mr. Yoseph Macwan has been chosen for the National Sahitya Academy Award. The Award, in the category of “Bal Sahitya Puraskar for 2012”, will be presented to him in November 2012. The Sahitya Academy has chosen his book “Aav Haya, Vartha Kahum” (Come Haya, I tell you a story). Haya is Yoseph’s granddaughter. Haya is often a child character in a few of his stories for children.


            “Aav Haya, Vartha Kahum” was written and published in 2008 by well known Gujarati publishers “Gurjar Granth Ratna Karyalay”, Ahmedabad. Haya was then a 4-5 years old child. The Executive Board of Sahitya Academy (National Academy of Literature, India) under the chairman of its President, Mr. Sunil Gangopadhyay has selected the book “Aav Haya Vartha Kahum” for the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for 2012.


            Yoseph has been writing poetry from his school-days and he has published them in top poetry magazines and other literary publications. He has more than 28 books to his credit including a 10 books in the category of children’s literature.


            Yoseph has translated the Psalms in the modern Catholic translation of the Bible by well known translators Mr. Nagindas Parekh and the Bible (& Gujarati) scholar Fr. Isudas Cueli, SJ. The Psalms translated by Yoseph are sung with gusto in churches and in other assemblies of Christians.


            Yoseph Macwan’s friends have translated a few of his select poems in to English. His poetry book in English entitled “Throbbing Words” is to be published soon. But this reporter, Fr. Varghese Paul, has written a review of “Throbbing Words” and published it in 2011 under the title “The Poetry of Yoseph Macwan” in a national publication making Yoseph known in the English literary world.


            Yoseph has been the Poetry-section Editor of “DOOT”, a Gujarati Catholic family magazine while this writer was its Chief Editor. For the last few year Yoseph has been the Secretary of “Gujarati Lekhak Mandal” (GLM – Gujarati Writers’ Association)  and one of the Editors of GLM quarterly “Lekhak ane Lekhan” published from Ahmedabad.


Yoseph’s selected poems have appeared in a few national publications like “International Literature Festival”, Mumbai 2007, “Indian Literature” in English and “Samkalin Bhartiy Sahity” in Hindi, both published by National Academy of Literature, New Delhi. His selected poems have also appeared in Indian languages like Hindi and Oriya.


            Yoseph has won several awards for his literary books in Gujarati from Gujarati Sahitya Academy, Gandhinagar and Gujarati Sahitya Parishad, Ahmedabad, etc.
